Symptoms & Signs 

What to look for: 

Hallux Valgus (Bunions)
Big toe joint swollen and red. It can be very painful but sometimes completely pain free. Big toe pushing on 2nd toe. Worse in shoes, but can be painful after removing the shoe. Arthritis or bursitis may occur with bunions

Ingrowing Toenails 
Red, painful, swollen, infected (sometimes with discharge) and can have bright red extra tissue. Particularly common in young people.

Hallux Rigidus (Arthritic or Stiff Big Toe)
Big toe joint is enlarged on the top. A very painful and stiff toe but the toe is usually straight and not leaning on the 2nd toe. Painful to walk or go onto tip toes. Painful in shoes (especially heeled).

Hammer Toes
Any of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th toes pushing up against the shoe with a sore or corn on the knuckle. Often with a bunion.

Chronic Corns
Areas of hard skin which have deep central hard and painful sections. Often on toes or on the ball of the foot.

Soft Tissue Lesions such as Neuroma
Neuroma usually is hot, tingling, burning, shooting or numb sensations into the middle toes or on the ball of the foot. Worse in tighter shoes after walking a bit. Other soft tissue problems can have a variety of symptoms.

Bony Lumps
Often due to an underlying arthritic joint. Painful due to pressure from shoes.

Flat Feet
Feet can be flat, high arched or anything in-between. Pain in the arch, instep or along the inside of the ankle might need treatment.
